SGS Career Development Grants

Skip breadcrumb navigation

Financial assistance is available for support of opportunities that will enhance the education and research training experience of graduate students in the School of Graduate Studies.  Two specific awards, one for travel and another for special events, are available on a competitive basis for full-time graduate students who are in good academic standing in the SGS.

Student Travel Grants

Student Travel Grants are intended to provide support for travel that is associated with a student's professional, career development. Support of up to $500 is available to SGS graduate students for such purposes as travel to professional, scientific meeting for students who are participating in a platform or poster presentation or travel associated with field work required as part of a dissertation research project.

Graduate students applying for a grant must complete the SGS Student Travel Grant Application form.  In addition, applicants must submit a 1-2 page proposal/summary with budget and budget justification, including details of available matching funds. Applications for Travel Grants must contain a cover memo indicating support from the student’s mentor and from the Director/Associate Dean of graduate studies at their location. Applications must be submitted through the Director/Associate Dean of graduate studies for each of the participating programs. All applications should be submitted electronically.

The following considerations should be kept in mind when applying for a Student Travel Grant:

  • It is expected that matching funds will be provided by the mentor or college/school to complete the funds necessary for travel.
  • In general, it is expected that eligible students may receive only one Student Travel Grant to support travel to a professional meeting. Only under exceptional circumstances will students be considered for more than one award. Therefore, students and mentors are discouraged from applying for this award earlier in their academic training.

 GSO Symposium

Program Enhancement Grants

Program Enhancement Grants are intended to provide support for special events that will enhance the overall graduate training experience by supplementing graduate activities throughout the SGS. Such events may include a lecture series with invited speakers, special short courses, GSO Symposia, and other events/programs that would enhance SGS students' graduate experience.

In order to be most competitive for funding, Program Enhancement Grants should be organized so that they clearly benefit an entire population of graduate students within a given location. While there is no proscribed limit, maximum funding for individual Program Enhancement Grants would typically be in the range of $1,000 to $2,500. Matching funds from the participating programs and institutions may be required to cover additional expenses.

Individuals requesting a Program Enhancement Grant must submit a 1-2 page proposal/summary with budget and budget justification, including details of matching funds.  Applications should be submitted through the Associate Dean of graduate studies for that location.  All applications should be submitted electronically.
